Capability Brown 300

This year is the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown’s birth.

There is a project with the Landscape Institute and English Heritage to highlight and celebrate his work. Three members felt that the Embroiderers’ Guild could also contribute in its own, unique way. The Landscape Institute welcomed the guild as a Festival partner.

The Cotswold Branch is joining with the Worcester Branch to put on an exhibition at Croome Park. Worcester is staging its exhibition in the Spring, and Cotswold is following in July. The exhibition will be staged in the Temple Greenhouse.

Croome was one of Brown’s first private commissions. He became a friend of the 6th Earl of Coventry and remained so for the rest of his life, he also remained involved with the Croome estate and its continuing development. He died, aged 67, on the way home after dining with the Earl at his London house.

The Earl put up a memorial to Brown beside the lake. The inscription reads

To the Memory of Lancelot Brown

Who by the powers of

His inimitable and creative genius

Formed this garden scene

Out of a morass.

Croome and the National Trust are staging many events. This February Dame Helen Ghosh, Director-General of the National Trust, started the year by planting a Cedar of Lebanon tree at the foot of Church Hill. The cedar is the iconic tree of Croome, seen all over the estate.
